Why March for Babies matters to me

Posted by Matt Thomson 2 Comments »

Baby girl

On May 1, 2010, my family will walk with hundreds of others in the Tacoma March for Babies, part of the March of Dimes charity.  4 years ago, I had heard of March of Dimes, but didn’t know a thing about it.  Now, we’ll be walking in our 3rd consecutive walk.  Why does March for Babies matter to me?  March of Dimes exists to help families with babies who were born prematurely.  Our daughter was born about 6 weeks early, weighing about 4lbs.  As traumatic as her 15 day stay in the Tacoma General NICU was for my wife and I, our daughter came out just fine.  We’re the lucky ones.  Premature birth can be the cause of several hardships throughout a child’s life.

I invite all of you to walk with us in May.  We’d love to have your support.   If you’re able, I’d love for you to be able to donate financially as well.  $10, $20, whatever would be appreciated.  You can donate online at my March for Babies webpage or you can give me a call and we can meet up and you can donate in person.  Any bit helps.  You can register to walk with us on my page as well!

Friday night is the annual Coalition: HUMAnE’s Whiskers Wine and Dine, an auction for animal lovers.  Coalition: HUMAnE, formerly the Peninsula Spay and Neuter Project, is a great organization for dog and cat lovers in the Gig Harbor area.  This auction, being held Friday evening in Tacoma, is their biggest fundraiser of the year.  Yours truly gets to be the Emcee for the 4th year in a row.  No one has ever given me a mic more than once other than these guys!  Visit their Facebook page for more info.

Gig Harbor PD offers “Trust in Parenting” Course!

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

The Gig Harbor Police Department will be hosting a very valuable course titled “Trust in Parenting.”  Below is the document I was sent describing the event.

We are excited to announce we’ve scheduled a new “Trust in Parenting” course (formerly called “Upgrade Your POS”).  ”Trust in Parenting” is a 6-week course for couples who want to become better communicators and parents.  The course will cover practical knowledge and skills that directly effect how you communicate both as a parent and as a spouse.

The first class is on February 23, from 6:30-7:30pm.  We will hold the classes at the Boys and Girls Club in Gig Harbor.

We recommend you check out the new “Trust in Parenting” website to get more information on the course, and read the agenda for each class.

Free childcare is an option if you need, but you’ll need to contact Peggy Lowe at 253-530-1740 at least 2 days ahead of time.

You can sign up for the course online or call our offices at 253-851-0350.

Great Salmon movie event at the Tides Tavern

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

Gig Harbor and salmon are connected in a variety of ways.  Many Harborites still make their living from fishing for salmon, and many others rely on the fishermen’s success for their own.  There’s an important decision looming on the horizon that will directly impact our salmon run.  Here’s bits of an email I received from Blake and Allison Merwin of the Gig Harbor Fly Shop

The Sportsman Alliance for Alaska is trying to raise awareness about the proposed Pebble Mine in the headwaters of Bristol Bay, Alaska. If this open pit mine (largest in North America) ends up going in it will destroy this last wild salmon stronghold. These watersheds now at risk comprise of 30% of the world’s sockeye runs with one of the rivers getting 60 million salmon itself.
This will affect the sport fishing community, commercial fishing community, as well as native subsistence fishery. This also affects us in a big way. If the price of sockeye, king, and coho go up because of these depleted stocks it will put pressure on our local fisheries here in Washington. Our fisheries are in a sad state and cannot handle anymore pressure.
We are hosting a film screening of two really cool documentaries about the Pebble Mine at Tides Tavern this upcoming Wednesday and Thursday (Feb 3 and 4) from 7-9pm. Tickets are $5 each and we have all sorts of door prizes.
Check out the Fly Fishing blog for more info.

Gig Harbor New Year’s Day 5k

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

The New Year’s Day 5k along Gig Harbor’s downtown waterfront was a great way to kick off 2010!  Proceeds from the race registrations went to benefit the families of the four fallen Lakewood Police Officers.  The race itself benefited the Gig Harbor community as a whole, bringing us together again for fitness and fun to start the new year!

Christmas activities in Gig Harbor

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

Tomorrow (Saturday the 12th) is one of my favorite days of the year to live in Gig Harbor.  If you’re looking for Christmas time activities around Gig Harbor, tomorrow is the day!  At 5pm, the Christmas light boat parade will begin circling the Harbor.  Dozens of boats of all types parade around Gig Harbor Bay decked out in their Christmas-light best.  It’s really a treat to see.  They launch from the main dock in Gig Harbor, but circle the entire bay a few times.  Finholms is our favorite viewing spot.

Then, from 6-8pm Discovery Baptist Church will be hosting their Living Nativity (this runs Fri-Sun).  This is unlike any living Nativity I’ve ever seen.  It’s not a drive by, look at the donkey and the baby, and move on kind of thing.  If you have the warm clothes, I recommend the walking tour (you can drive).  This little area is converted to ancient Bethlehem, and it’s truly a treat to view.

If you’re looking for fun Christmas ideas in Gig Harbor, be sure to visit these two!
