GHHS and Peninsula cross country teams run for state!

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

I absolutely LOVE high school sports.  I miss coaching…kind of.  The day to day coaching activities I don’t miss so much, but I truly loved being around high school athletics and I loved hosting meets and organizing teams and computing statistics.  Tomorrow (Halloween day) both Gig Harbor High School and Peninsula High School’s cross country teams will be competing in the West Central District Championships to try and earn births to the State Championships.

If you want to see the purest form of sport that’s left in our country, if you want to be amazed at the focus and dedication of teenagers, if you want to be inspired to get/be healthy, come out to American Lake in Lakewood tomorrow afternoon to watch these kids run.  I can’t even explain in words how beautiful this sport is, and this meet in particular is just a showcase of pure, old-fashioned, high school athletics at their best.  You can find the meet schedule here (Gig Harbor is 4A, Peninsula 3A).  If you’ve got younger kids who may not be drawn to the more traditional sports but you’d like for them to find something athletic to participate in, bring them to the xc district championships tomorrow!  They’ll fall in love with the sport and the atmosphere!

Friday videos–Veggie Tales

Posted by Matt Thomson 1 Comment »

Halloween is supposed to be really scary.  I’m not a big fan of scary things.  In honor of Halloween, then, here’s the Veggie Tales singing “God is bigger than the Boogie Man.”

2010 Gig Harbor Photo Calendars are ready to order!

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

My 4th annual Gig Harbor calendar is just about ready to be shipped, which means it’s ready for order!  This calendar has 12 of the most gorgeous photographs taken in Gig Harbor over the past year from a variety of photographers, and is a full size 11″x17″ calendar for only $15.

If you live in the Gig Harbor area, you can either pick it up at my Keller Williams Realty office or I’d be happy to deliver it to you.  If you live out of the Gig Harbor area, I’ll be happy to mail it to you for the cost of shipping.

This isn’t a money maker for me, just a way to share my love of Gig Harbor and my love of photography!  If you would like to order a calendar (or several), just email me with how many you’d like, and if you’ll need them shipped, delivered, or if you’d like to pick them up.

I’ll be able to take cash or check, and maybe be set up with Pay Pal!

To order your 2010 Gig Harbor calendars, email GigHarborInfo@gmail.com

Gig Harbor Chiropractic and Massage–I’m a believer!

Posted by Matt Thomson 3 Comments »

Gig Harbor Chiropractic and Massage has made a believer out of me!  Before this summer, even the thought of chiropracty (is that a word?) made me cringe.  I don’t do well with pain, I don’t do well with the sight of blood, and the sound of my body cracking makes me nauseous.  However, I was having some nagging back pain and I couldn’t figure out how to get rid of it.

At the Gig Harbor Maritime Festival, I met Dr. Greg and his team from Gig Harbor Chiropractic and Massage, and they offered a screening and x-rays for only $20.  Sign me up!  I went and realized my spine was pretty out of whack.  My first appointment was pretty nerve wracking, as having my back and neck cracked freaked me out…it didn’t hurt at all, just freaked me out.  It did make me feel better though…noticably better.

I’ve been getting chiropractic treatment now every week for about five months.  I love it!  I never thought I’d set foot in a chiropractor’s office, and now I love it!  If you’re having any kind of back pain, headaches, or other symptoms and you’ve thought of trying to find a chiropractor in Gig Harbor, give Dr. Greg a call at Gig Harbor Chiropractic and Massage.  Let them know you read about them on this site!

Fall is leaving Gig Harbor

Posted by Matt Thomson 2 Comments »

Another great fall in Gig Harbor seems to be on its way out.  The leaves are dropping and the bare trees show that winter is on its way.  I took my daughter and doggy on a nice walk through Canterwood the other day and got a few nice fall photos, and took some other pictures at the Chum Festival a week or so ago.  Any nice fall photos of Gig Harbor you’d like to share?

Gig Harbor’s too beautiful for election season

Posted by Matt Thomson 4 Comments »

Gig Harbor is simply too beautiful of a place for it to be ruined each election season.  Politicians, I know that name recognition is important, but we’re not in junior high.  The guy with the coolest sign isn’t the winner.  Voters, I know it’s tempting to vote for the names you recognize, but we’re not in junior high.  We need to vote based on actual issues and not who has the most signs littering our beautiful town.  Voters, please vote by next week.  Politicians, PLEASE remove your signs ASAP.

What exactly are “Closing Costs?”

Posted by Matt Thomson 1 Comment »

When buying a new home, “closing costs” are often an area of confusion.  I believe that the best bet is to contact a local mortgage broker (in the Gig Harbor area I’d recommend Bill Hannon of Republic Mortgage) and get an accurate understanding of all of your closing costs.  For those who may not be ready to take that step just yet, take a look at the video below from WAR that gives a nice overview of closing costs.

Friday Night Videos–Boyz II Men

Posted by Matt Thomson 1 Comment »

I was such a nerd in high school.  I don’t know if my friends either didn’t tell me, or if they did and I just didn’t listen.  Either way, I was a nerd.  The worst kind, too.  Not the nerd who knows he’s a nerd so it’s okay, but the kind who thought he was cool.  I had an identity crisis my junior year and became a hip hop rapper.  I started dressing like Boyz II Men.  Denim shirt with a tie, denim shorts (yes, shorts with a tie), high top brown suede shoes with my white tube socks scrunched down, and a bright blue Toronto Blue Jays hat.  I was smooth.  Check out the video for a glimpse into my sad junior year of high school.

What to do in Gig Harbor for Halloween

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

Halloween in Gig Harbor is a pretty fun time.  I’ll admit, I’m one of those who’s not much for celebrating evil, so I’m more of a Harvest Party guy than a Halloween guy, but we can discuss that in another forum.  Gig Harbor has some fun Trick or Treat activities, our favorite being the Downtown Assoc. Trick or Treat.  From 3-6pm, Harborview Drive will be closed down and many of the waterfront homes and merchants will have Trick or Treating!  Also from 3-6pm the Gig Harbor Uptown Center will be having their Trick or Treat festivities.

There are pumpkin patches, pumpkin decorating contests, and an 8k run as well.  Check out the Gig Harbor Guide blog for a full list of Halloween activities in Gig Harbor.  Friday night (the 30th) my family and I will be at the Harvest Party at Believer’s Fellowship church on Hunt St.  If you know of any other activities, please leave them in the comments!
