Everyone is invited to celebrate Gig Harbor’s firemen, law enforcement, EMT’s and their families on Saturday October 4 from 1-4pm! Below is a copy of the email I received (and for my wife’s sake, I know it should be inaugural, not 1st Annual!):
Please join us and say THANK YOU to Gig Harbor’s first responders and their families, who give so much to protect our community.
The 1ST ANNUAL GIG HARBOR Celebration & Blessing of Law Enforcement, Firefighters, EMTs and their Families, will be held Sunday, October 4, 2009 from 1-4 pm. This non-denominational event will be hosted at the Gig Harbor Methodist Church located at 7400 Pioneer Way. The blessing ceremony will take place from 2-2:30 pm.
Fire engines, police, sheriff and state cruisers, police motorcycle and ambulance, K-9 unit, a bomb disposal truck and robot will be featured, and photographers will be on hand to take pictures of children enjoying themselves on the emergency equipment. There will be live music, entertainment, children’s carnival games, face painting, fingerprinting, giveaways and light refreshments.

Ever thought of visiting Gig Harbor, WA, but weren’t sure why, when, or what you’d do? This Saturday (Sept 26th) is the weekend to visit! Here’s a quick run-down of all that’s happening in Gig Harbor on Saturday (that I know of…feel free to add if you know of other events):
- Great open house: On Saturday from 2-4pm I’ll be hosting an open house in the gated community of Southport, just off of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Check out this beautifully updated, 4bd/2.75ba home for $459,000
- Harbor Hounds Dog Walk: Not only is this one of the most popular events in the Harbor all year, but it’ll be the subject of our next Gig Harbor Undressed photo contest as well, with a chance to win up to $20 in coffee cards from Cutter’s Point Uptown.
- Final day of the Gig Harbor Farmer’s Market. You’ll find amazing deals on fresh veggies, flowers, crafts and more.
- Chowder Cook-off: In conjunction with the Farmer’s Market is the annual Chowder Cook off where you can sample and judge (for Free!) several different chowder’s from the area’s top cooks.
- National Public Lands Day: Join PenMet Parks in cleaning up the Sehmel Homestead Park and possibly get a tour of the facility. This will be a fantastic addition to Gig Harbor’s parks!
- Kids’ Movies at the Galaxy: Every Saturday morning for only $2 (a donation to Shop with a Cop) you can watch a great kids’ movie at the Uptown Galaxy Theater. This week: Aristocats.
- Garage Sales: Several neighborhoods will be hosting garage sales and the Peninsula Lutheran Church will be hosting their annual Rummage and Bake Sale.
You can get most of the details of these events at the GigHarborGuide website or contact me. I’ve included as many links as I could as well!

Saturday (Sept 26) is Harbor Hounds Day in Gig Harbor! This Harbor-wide dog walk is one of the most popular days of the year for dog lovers in Gig Harbor (and one of the most dreaded for those who aren’t as fond of God’s best gift to humans!). Harbor Hounds is a great event to raise money for the Prison Pet Partnership and Coalition:HUMAnE, and the Gig Harbor Rotary.

Harbor Hounds will be the subject of our next Gig Harbor Undressed Photo Contest! If you’d like a chance to win gift certificates to Cutter’s Point Coffee Uptown, all you have to do is send in your favorite picture from the event. First place gets a $20 certificate, 2nd place $10, and 3rd place $5! Simply email your favorite photos from the event (limit of 3 per person) to me at mthomson@kw.com no later than 10am on Monday the 28th. You can also email me links to your photos if you have them online. Be sure to specify which 3 you want eligible for the contest if you have several posted. I’ll announce the winners on Wednesday the 30th.

I’m such a sap. It’s borderline embarassing. But how can you not love this song? I played this on repeat over and over and over when a girl friend dumped me. Pathetic, I know.

Are you looking for homes for sale in Gig Harbor? Do you know anybody who is wanting to buy a home in Gig Harbor? What about the surrounding area? I need you to think hard here! Who do you work with that mentioned they’re wanting to buy a house? Anybody you employ? How about a friend at church? Somebody at the gym say they wish they could afford to buy a home in Gig Harbor?
I’ve got 9 homes for sale in Gig Harbor and the surrounding area, ranging from $185,000-$790,000 meeting the needs of many different people. Take a look at all of them, and read the quick summaries below.
6607 173rd Ave ($185,000)–This is a 3bd/2ba home in a great new Longbranch neighborhood. Built in 2005, it still feels new. Sits on just shy of 2 acres, but in a neighborhood setting. Part of the Peninsula School District, it’s a great price for a first time buyer or someone looking for a rental property.
2713 58th Ave ($315,000)–A great commuter home in a wonderful Fife neighborhood. Somebody wants high class upgrades, a nice neighborhood, and easy access to Seattle, Tacoma, and Olympia, this is the house!
12000 Mayfair Ave ($319,900)–In the Burley area of Port Orchard, this great home on a large corner lot is about 10 minutes from Port Orchard and Gig Harbor, giving you great access to all the amenities of both. Huge yard with gazebo, hot tub, garden, and play area. Slab granite, updated mill work, huge bonus room and more!
7535 SE Nelson Rd ($342,000)–This home is a short sale, on it’s way to becoming bank owned. Nearly 2800sf on a gorgeous 5 acre lot. There’s a separate apartment over the garage, a main floor master, and tons of room to play. This house is a STEAL!
1814 44th St Ct NW ($459,900)–Located in a prime lot in one of Gig Harbor’s most sought after neighborhoods, the gated Southport Community. Ideal neighborhood with sidewalks and a community park, 2 gated entrances, located just off of the Narrows Bridge for easy commuting. Tons of upgrades you won’t find in other homes in this neighborhood, and a prime lot for optimum privacy and quiet!
8615 66th Ave ($495,000)–A rare opportunity to get brand new construction in Gig Harbor for under $500k. Sitting on 1.46 acres, about 1mile from GHHS and Discovery Elementary School, about 2 miles from the Gig Harbor waterfront. This pre-sale home will be built to your needs.
2501 6th St ($497,000)–Saratoga is the neighborhood of choice for the picky Gig Harbor buyers. Located right across the bridge, this gated community has great views of the Puget Sound, Narrows Bridges, and Mt Rainier. This home is the least expensive (and maybe best maintained) home in the entire neighborhood. Enjoy the huge corner lot and great views.
918 Lummi Dr Fox Island ($595,000)–The lowest cost p/sf view home on the Island. Nearly 4000sf, over an acre of yard, 2 master suites, 2 bonus rooms, tons of high end finishes, and great Sound and sunset views. This is THE entertaining house!
14518 SilerLane ($790,000)–Looking for custom, high end, and private? STOP! Huge custom home on 2.5 flat acres. 2 master bedrooms, 3 bedrooms with their own balconies, private gated entrance, minutes to Gig Harbor North’s amenities, total seclusion, hot tub, outdoor firepit, the list goes on. Truly a spectacular home.
So THINK HARD! Who do you know who would thank you for years to come if you introduced them to one of these fine homes? Please pass this on or contact me for a showing. Keep in mind that any home you see for sale in Gig Harbor, even a For Sale By Owner, I am able to assist you in the home buying process!

Many folks, when moving to Gig Harbor, want to know about the crime rate in Gig Harbor. The Gig Harbor Police Department has a great service where you can pinpoint a specific address and learn about all of the crimes that have happened within a small radius of that home. The Gig Harbor Crime Mapping page is a fantastic resource to learn where the safest areas in Gig Harbor are, and any problem spots as well.
Gig Harbor is one of the safest areas in the state to live, and the majority of crimes tend to be home or vehicle thefts. If you want any information or statistics on the crime rate in Gig Harbor, check out the GHPD website to get all of the facts. I typed in “Southport” to find crime information on a home I recently listed for sale…not a single crime reported year to date!

The Blazing Onion Restaurant is now open in Gig Harbor! My family and I got to take a test drive of the new place to eat in Gig Harbor last night, and it was great! A huge selection of burgers, sandwhiches, soups and salads, plus a great kids’ menu made sure that we were all satisfied. The environment was great, too, with several flat screen TV’s large booths that a booster seat fit easily on, and a super helpful, friendly wait staff.
One of Blazing Onion’s promises is that if you need something, simply put a red card in a stand on your table and someone will be there to help within 30 seconds, usually less. I watched and waited all night, thought I found a moment when everyone was distracted, and raised the card to get a refill on my drink (something I could have done myself) and a refill on the bottomless french fries. 4 seconds. It took the kid 4 seconds to get to my table. Pretty cool.
With prices ranging from $6-$15, there were plenty of options and there was plenty of food. My wife and I easily could have split an order. She had a Cobb salad that she loved, chicken strips and a fruit bowl kept the daughter happy, and I had a cod sandwhich that I found to be better than any other fish in Gig Harbor. Far less greasy and way more flavorful. As of today, The Blazing Onion is Gig Harbor’s newest restaurant and full-service bar (didn’t check out that section). Try it out and let me know what you think!
