Fun at Lake Chelan

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

Okay, okay, I know that this site is supposed to be dedicated to Gig Harbor, but hang with me and I’ll make the connection.  Some folks tend to like the heat.  I see 75 and sunny and think that this must be what heaven is like, others wonder where their sweatshirt is.  I hear it’ll be high 90’s and I’m looking for the nearest air conditioned ice cream shop, others break out the water toys and come to life.

Gig Harbor doesn’t reach the 90’s often (that’s one of the reasons why I live here).  Lake Chelan, on the other hand, does.  There’s a group of folks from our church (which is in Gig Harbor) who spend a week each summer enjoying Lake Chelan.  I went one summer, and almost melted (but still had a pretty good time).  For those who think Gig Harbor looks like a great place to live but worry that maybe it’s too cold and want a great place to go wakeboarding, waterskiing, or just sun tanning, Lake Chelan is a mere 200 mile (3 1/2 - 4hour) drive away.  Here are a few shots of Scott Teodoro (co-owner of Gig Harbor’s Harbor Greens Market) wakeboarding with his son for the first time.  See, I told you I could tie Lake Chelan and Gig Harbor together!

Have you seen Gig Harbor from the water?

Posted by Matt Thomson No Comments »

Gig Harbor is a gorgeous place.  Can’t really argue that one.  But have you ever seen Gig Harbor from the water?  Have you ever boated or paddled around Fox Island? Explored Wollochet Bay from water skis?  Our area looks vastly different from the water.  A whole new perspective is opened up.  Here are a few photos of our boating trip around Gig Harbor yesterday.

Okay, that last photo is from a few summers ago, but I still love it!

Thunderbirds swoop in to Gig Harbor

Posted by Matt Thomson 3 Comments »

Thunderbird showEven though I live in a great sailing town, I know surprisingly little about sailing.  By “surprisingly little,” I guess I mean nothing.  That’s what friends are for.  This weekend Gig Harbor is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Thunderbird sailboats.  Nothing about that got me excited until I spoke with my friend and fellow Keller Williams Realtor Gerry Dryer.  Gerry built his Thunderbird starting in 1962.  After an amazing story, he still has it and sails it.

Thunderbirds

I don’t want to give too much misinformation, so I’ll recite the little bit I learned from Gerry and then hopefully some of you who know better can fill us in in the comments section.  Thunderbirds are great little homemade sailboats.  The Dryers bought the plans for theirs for $2!  Apparently the plywood that was sent to build the boat was 28′ long and had to be delivered on a special truck.

This weekend you’ll notice that a temporary dock has been set up in the Gig Harbor marina for the hundreds of Thunderbirds that have gathered for the 50th Anniversary party.  It’s well worth making your way downtown and taking a look.  Please, if you have more information on the Thunderbirds and what makes them so special, comment here and share your knowledge with us!  You can email me some photos as well if you’ve got some good ones you’d like to share.
