2nd Narrows Bridge Makes Traffic Disappear!

Posted by Matt Thomson

Well, after years of watching the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge be constructed (which was very impressive, I might add), after many arguments over the financing of the bridge, after numerous debates over whether or not it would have any impact, I think the decision has been made.

Our new Tacoma Narrows Bridge has been open now for about 3 months, schools have begun, and still the traffic going both eastbound and westbound, both morning and evening, is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced.  There is no way that anybody can argue how much nicer our traffic is now with the new bridge.  When was the last time you could come home from Tacoma on a Friday night at 5:30pm and not slow down below 45MPH?  Not in the 10 years that I’ve lived here.  Leaving Gig Harbor at 8am for a 9am appointment in Seattle?  It can be done now!

My wife and I recently had our first baby girl born at Tacoma General, and she had to spend 15 days in their NICU.  I can’t begin to explain how wonderful it was to be able to cruise across the bridge at any time of the day.  Do I enjoy paying $1.75 each time I cross?  Of course not!  10 times out of 10 I’d pay that toll on my way to see my newborn as opposed to sitting in traffic not moving, though!

Many folks are still angered by the tolls, there is still a debate raging over whether or not to light the bridge, but the traffic cannot be argued.  If you haven’t had a chance to drive the new span, I invite you to take a trip to Gig Harbor, see how easy it is, and enjoy all that our community has to offer!
